Looking to switch up your usual order of an espresso martini but still wanting that caffeine fix in your cocktails? A bourbon espresso old fashioned offers a bold and sophisticated twist on a classic cocktail. This drink combines the rich flavors of espresso with the sweet bourbon and brown sugar syrup.
A great alternative for espresso martini lovers with the same delicious flavors but with a bourbon twist. Best of all, this cocktail is easy to make all in one glass, no shaker required.
I based this recipe on one by The G&M Kitchen but used some alternative ingredients that I was unable to find in store.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces of bourbon (I used Wolcott Authentic Kentucky Made Bourbon)
- 1 shot of Java Love Premium Espresso Blend
- ¾ ounce of brown sugar syrup
- 1.5 ounces of old fashioned cocktail mixer (I used Bittermilk Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Fashioned Cocktail Mixer)
In the original recipe, chocolate bitters are used but if you’re unable to find it, a cocktail mixer like the one I used works just as well. It has notes of vanilla, orange, and old fashioned spices.
To make the brown sugar syrup there are two options. Brown sugar syrups are easy to buy from brands like Torani or Monin but they’re even easier to make at home.
To make the brown sugar syrup combine 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup of water in a small pot. Let it simmer until the sugar is dissolved and wait till the mixture cools down to use. This mixture will be good in the refrigerator for 1 month and can be used for cocktails and coffee!
Directions
- Add ice to a glass and top with bourbon, espresso, syrup, and the cocktail mixer
- Stir to combine
- Garnish with a orange peel if desired
This new take on an old fashioned is a must try for all coffee cocktail fans!
