Brew Your Way to Better Mental Health: The Power of Mindful Practices

As we delve into Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to explore various avenues for nurturing our mental well-being amidst the chaos of everyday life. In the age of excessive screen time, rediscovering mindfulness is essential for fostering a healthy mind and spirit. That’s why we’ve curated a list of mindful practices to integrate into your daily routine and get you started on a journey to improved mental health:

Connect with Nature: Whether it's a leisurely stroll downtown or a hike in the mountains, connecting with nature can provide a much-needed sense of calm, especially as the weather gets warmer. Some of our favorite local spots to exercise outdoors near Montclair are the Mills Reservation Trail, Eagle Rock Yellow and Red Trails, and West Essex Rail Trail.

Mindful Breathing: Take a few moments each day to engage in deep, intentional breathing exercises. We recommend getting started with meditation podcasts like The Daily Meditation Podcast and Meditation Station. Intentionally focusing on your breath can alleviate stress and allow you to be fully present.

Practice Gratitude: Start your day by reflecting on what you're grateful for right now. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can help you shift to a more positive outlook on life, and it can even be as simple as jotting down three things you're grateful for every morning. 

Prioritize Sleep: Ensure you get adequate quality sleep each night by establishing a relaxing bedtime routine and limiting screen time before bed to promote better sleep hygiene. Maintain a Strong Support System: Don't hesitate to lean on your support system when you're feeling overwhelmed. Whether it's a friend, family member, or mental health professional, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Over a coffee or through the phone, hearing the voices of loved ones is always a source of comfort.

Drink coffee!: While we may be biased, coffee itself offers several benefits that can aid in improving mental health. It’s a natural mood booster: caffeine stimulates the release of neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, associated with feelings of happiness. Additionally, regular coffee consumption has been linked to anti-inflammatory effects, which helps reduce the severity of depression and low moods associated with high levels of inflammatory markers.
