It feels like every week in New Jersey we’re getting hit with another snowstorm! At Java Love we miss seeing all of your faces in person at our cafes. You can use your favorite Java Love beans at home with this DIY banana bread coffee syrup recipe. Most of the ingredients you’ll find in your pantry already, almost everyone has bananas at home.

One of our social media team members Niko made a step by step video on our TikTok and here's the link if visuals are more your thing.

If you prefer the traditional style written out step by step tutorial then keep reading!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 ½ cup of water

  • 1 ½ banana’s mashed

  • 1 cup of brown sugar

  • ¼ cup of sugar

  • ¼ cup of maple syrup

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ⅛ tsp ground ginger

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Step by step instructions:

  1. First, you’ll need to mash your bananas. The easiest way to do that is to peel them, slice them, then mash them. Slicing them first helps the mashing process.

  2. Next, you’ll want to combine all ingredients EXCEPT the vanilla extract in a medium size sauce pan.

  3. Over medium heat, you’re going to occasionally whisk the mixture as it combines.

  4. You’re going to wait for the mixture to simmer. Once it starts to simmer, set a timer for 5 minutes and let it simmer over that medium heat.

  5.  After the timer goes off, you will pull the mixture off of the heat and strain the syrup to get the large pieces of bananas separate from your syrup. You’ll want to pull out the cinnamon sticks as well.

  6. You want your syrup to have no chunks in it, it should be smooth. Once the syrup has been fully strained you can toss the portion left in the strainer (which will just be bananas) and you can stir in the vanilla extract.

  7. Then, you will want to let the syrup cool. After you let it cool you can transfer the syrup into a refrigerator safe container of your choice and store it in the fridge for up to two weeks.

  8. The final and most important step is to use your favorite Java Love beans and the banana bread syrup to make an amazing latte in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Java Love offers a variety of amazing coffee beans with different flavor notes. My pairing for this latte would be our Sumatra Mutu Batak dark roast blend with notes of a sweet earthy base and dark plum as well as honey. Those flavors combined with the banana bread syrup craft the perfect drink. You can take a look at our beans here.
